Microsoft is beginning to roll out a beta version of Skype for Web today. This new beta will allow for voice and video calling through a web browser without the use of a browser plugin. Microsoft had began slowly bringing Skype to the web through its Outlook.com services, however this beta will work across current versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari without the need to download any applications.
Skype for web will operate directly from Skype.com. Microsoft will be utilizing Web Real-Time Communication APIs to allow browser-to-broswer voice calling, video chat and instant messaging. This new platform will be available for a small group of testers in the coming weeks with a gradual worldwide roll out to follow in the coming months.
