Last night at The Landmark Theatre I attended what is easily my favorite event of the year. It was the 5th annual Buy Local Bash presented by AmeriCU Credit Union and Syracuse First. The Buy Local Bash kicks off the holiday season by bring a community together to celebrate local and independent businesses. The focus of the event is to show the importance of supporting local businesses and why we all should shift at least 10% of our shopping to local and independent businesses.
In its 5th year, this event has been held at numerous local venues including (but not limited to) The MOST, The Regional Market, Benjamins on Franklin and of course this year at the beautiful and historic Landmark Theatre. This has grow significantly from its first year in 2010, featuring almost 90 small and local businesses.
I love that at this event, I learn about business I didn’t know even existed in Syracuse. I got to meet Scott Friedberg of Gilded Social. His company provides the equipment to live stream social media to any television set. His installments are currently at such local business as Cafe Kubal and Metro Fitness. I also go to learn about Brazzelbox which is an exclusive social network for small and home based businesses. This awesome and amazing start up is located right here in Syracuse. Of course there were the usual suspects who always make it a point to support local causes such as Gannon Pest Control, Empire Brewing Company, Believe in Syracuse and of course Syracuse NewTimes.
As always this was an amazing event. My hat is off to Chris Fowler, founder of SyracuseFirst and a true pioneer of the local movement. With out him and his amazing team this event would not be possible. I urge everyone to make the 10% shift to local and remember that by doing so you make an impact to the economic success of our community.
