Yesterday, June 12, 2015 was the second annual Salt City Collect-A-Con was held at the F Shed of the Regional market. This event was put on by Larger Than Life Toys & Comics. This event featured tons of vendors featuring such items as collectible toys, comics and other various geek related items. As this was the second year of this event, it was my second year attending. This year was big and better than last years featuring video game tournaments presented by GameStop and cosplayers including this one who was dressed as Raven from Teen Titans
On hand for the event was Syracuse Nerd, who spoke at length about how the Syracuse community is ripe for a major convention. Speaking about all of the smaller conventions that happen, stating that it would be such a major draw for Syracuse if they all came together and organized.
Play the Game, Read the Story was on hand and hosted a free play table top gaming tournament. All the vendors on hand seemed to have the same common goal: support the local geek community, a cause we here at Urban Geek CNY can totally get behind. One of the highlights of the day was the appearance of The Real Rochester Ghostbusters
All of the vendors on hand were super friendly and knowledgable not only of their products but of the culture as well. Some artists were on hand doing custom pieces as well as selling their own art work. One of the biggest things we enjoyed the most were the conversations. Every vendor had a wide variety of items but had one topic they were most passionate about where it was Marvel Comics, Batman, Star Wars, whatever it was they were open and willing to talk about it. Sometimes these type of events can look like a flea market to outsiders, however it is those conversations and that passion that makes this event and all comic, collectible events so amazing.
As always this was an amazing family event and the team at Larger Than Life Toys & Games did an amazing job putting it all together. Not only did this event bring our community together but it also help those beyond the geek community. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the Boys & Girls Club. I cannot wait to see how this event grows next year and for years to come.
Once again I rate this event a 5 out 5 and continue to look forward to future events. I encourage everyone to head down to Great Northern Mall and check out Larger Than Life Toys & Comics. They offer a wide variety of collectible toys as well as comics and graphic novels. They also offer free subscription service so you never miss an issue of your favorite comics.
